a list of fun things to do in October and November around The Heights, Montrose, and the Greater Houston Area

Make sure these October and November events are on your calendar

Welcome to Heather's Happenings, a list of fun things to do in October and November around The Heights, Montrose, and the Greater Houston Area.

There is always something happening in The Heights, Houston's most prestigious quadrant of luxury homes and incredible venues. You will find a rich arts and entertainment culture, from formal concerts and theatrical performances to happy hours and professional networking events. Whether you're seeking a farmer's market at dawn, craving a wine-and-painting class at dusk, or longing for a sock hop that rocks into the night, you'll find everything you could hope for on Houston's busy fall events calendar.

Heather Fordham of New Heights Real Estate knows everything there is to know about living a full life in the beautiful suburbs and urban high-rises of our glittering coastal city. In our first edition of Heather's Happenings, we’ll list the best things going on, so you don’t miss out.

Where to catch concerts and shows

Check out the White Oak Music Hall and the Heights Theater if you're looking for fantastic music, comedy, or light theatrical performances. Both a comfortably close drive from your home in The Heights neighborhoods or Montrose property, these two theaters are beautiful and always lively with something playing live.
We wouldn't dream of dictating your tastes in music or performances — we don't have to! The White Oak Music Hall and The Heights Theater have a little bit of everything. Here are just a few highlights from October to November 2022.

Heather's Happenings: Explore 11 events around the Heights in OctoberNovember 2022

Now that you've got your concert schedule, let's talk about your afternoons, evenings, and weekend plans. The Heights are full of delightful things to do no matter when your free time manifests. So, we've put together a dozen great events that you can enjoy solo, on a date night, with your best friends, or with every family member.

October 1st (Saturday, 6 p.m.) – Parents Night Out at Premier Martial Arts

The Premier Martial Arts studio holds regular classes for kids and adults. But on October 1st, they're doing something extra special. The martial arts studio offers a Parents Night Out where children are welcome to stay for an extra-long martial arts lesson and pizza party for four glorious hours while parents do whatever they want.

October 6th (Thursday, 4 p.m.) – Heights Young Professionals Happy Hour at William Price Distilling Company

As fall is just kicking off, you'll discover there are already things to do. For the young professionals and the young-at-heart in your household, the Heights Young Professionals Happy Hour is hosted at William Price Distilling. This lively social event is designed to be the perfect networking opportunity. The event breaks up just in time for newly formed groups to choose a new venue to share dinner and keep the conversation going.

October 8th (Saturday, 2 p.m.) – Kemah Boardwalk Fall Beer Fest

Get yourself to the Kemah Boardwalk this October and sample over 72 unique beverages from 24 breweries. The Fall Beer Fest is not an Octoberfest per se, but the theme skews German with beer samples, live music, and bratwurst, all of which come with your ticket, which runs $54.95. The event is for ages 21 and up, with beer tents spaced out around the Main Event Plaza and Bradford Plaza. Breweries include national brands like Blue Moon and Samuel Adams alongside a roster of local favorites.

October 16th (Sunday, 7 p.m.) – Pastries & Poetry: Spoken Word Under the Stars

The Spoken Word Under the Stars event is organized by Houston entertainment outfit Sol-Caritas, the only local production company to go all-in on poetry and improv shows. October 16 marks the first chapter of scaled-up poetic entertainment. Ideal for couples, friends, and families, poetry will be read on the Skylawn of the Post Houston Cultural Center. From the lawn, you will have a view of the stars and the Houston skyline. Admission is $40 and includes a slice of fresh-baked cake from Lucy Pearl’s Sweets.

October 21st (Friday, 6 p.m.) – Painting with a Twist: Crescent Tide

Painting with a Twist is one of our favorite regular events, with wine-sipping and painting classes ongoing almost every night. Each class features a different painting, and each painter can choose whether to paint on canvas, shiplap, or planks for her unique piece of art to take home. Go solo, bring a date, or bring your friends to paint together and meet other painters.

We chose October 21st because the painting, Crescent Tide, is lovely, and you might want your handmade rendition on your wall at home. Or to give as a gift.

October 29th (Saturday, 6 p.m.) – Painting with a Twist Date Night: Forever More

October 29th is another excellent chance to catch an evening Painting with a Twist class; this time, it’s date night. Forever More is a beautiful activity where each of you paints one half of a painting. Enjoy your favorite wines alongside your favorite person for a beautiful night creating a piece of artwork the two of you can hang at home.

November 4th (Friday, 12 p.m.) – First Friday LGBT Meet & Eat

On the first Friday of this November, you can join the Greater Houston LGBT Chamber of Commerce for a Meet & Eat at Pho 518 Vietnamese Noodle House. If you are an LGBT person, household, or friendly ally, “The Chamber” welcomes you to make new friends and networking opportunities at each monthly Meet & Eats. Share a plate of Khai vi (appetizers) with your table and try Vietnam’s most famous traditional soup.

November 5th (Saturday, 3 p.m.) – K-9 Angels Rescue

Who wouldn’t love a volunteer opportunity involving puppies? K-9 Angels Rescue is an organization that rescues and re-homes shelter dogs in Houston — regardless of their breed or circumstances. Their goals are to alleviate overcrowding in animal shelters and educate the public on issues like irresponsible breeding. Should you volunteer, you will walk dogs, greet people, and connect adopters with adoptees. The volunteering cohort exceeds 350 people passionate about animal welfare, making this recurring event a great way to meet like-minded Houstonians. You can register online, attend orientation, and sign up for shifts.

November 12 (Saturday, 7 p.m.) – Demetri Martin: I Feel Funny Tour

The writer, director, and stand-up comedian will perform at House of Blues Houston this November. Tickets are available for purchase online. If you’re unfamiliar with his work, check out any of Demetri’s stand-up comedy albums or specials, such as The Overthinker on Netflix. As for House of Blues, the venue hosts concerts and special events most nights year-round.

November 16 (Wednesday, 6 p.m.) – Ping Pong Social

The social, free of charge, is planned by Bayou City Outdoors, self-billed as the largest activity club in Texas. To be held at Providence Heights Bar, the Ping Pong Social is a low-key happy hour with ping pong matches between players of similar skill levels. The bar also has Mario Kart, other video games, and board games (you’re invited to bring your own). Outside the Ping Pong Social, the club, with over 700 active members, joins for outdoor fun — hiking, biking, kayaking, camping, canoeing, paddle boarding, etc. All are welcome, and most meet-ups are planned for beginners.

November 27th (Sunday, 9 a.m.) – Heights Mercantile Farmers Market

Farmers' markets are a favorite event in many communities, and The Heights is no exception. We love our Farmers Market, held every other Sunday at the Heights Mercantile, an indoor-outdoor market venue where local farmers bring not just fresh produce but delicious meals, freshly baked bread, and handmade crafts as well. Enjoy this event of music and celebrate local agriculture with farm-fresh foods.
